This article discusses the technical requirements for ads utilizing images on Instagram.

Feeds

Selecting the Instagram Feed placement will allow members of your audience to see your ad within their Instagram app feed. 

Requirements:

  • File type: jpg or png

  • Maximum file size: 30MB

  • Recommended resolution: highest possible

  • Minimum Image Width in Pixels : 500

  • Aspect Ratio Tolerance : 1%

  • Minimum Image Ratio : 4:5

  • Maximum Image Ratio : 1.91:1

Denim recommends the image ratio of 4:5 for ads being displayed on Feeds. 

Stories

These full screen vertical ads appear between Instagram user stories. Photo stories are visible for 5 seconds or until the user swipes out of the story.

Best practice: keep roughly 14% (250 pixels) of the top and bottom of the image free from text and logos. These two areas house the profile icon and the call-to-action. This means, if your image is 1080px x 1920px, ensure key elements appear within a 1080px x 1420px area.

Requirements:

  • Image ratios: 9:16 and 16:9 to 4:5

  • Minimum Image Width in Pixels : 500

  • Aspect Ratio Tolerance : 1%

  • Maximum Image Ratio : 9:16

Because most consumers hold their phones in portrait orientation, Denim recommends an image ratio of 9:16 for ads being displayed on Stories.
